Summer Cycling Safety Guide: Are you really prepared to cycle in high temperatures?

2026 05/11

Summer is the best time to navigate city streets and enjoy countryside greenways, but high temperatures, sudden weather changes, and rapid energy depletion also pose hidden risks to summer cycling. The following provides practical safety advice from five dimensions: equipment, planning, hydration, bike condition, and emergency handling.

Equipment Selection: Balancing Sun Protection and Hygiene

Sun Protection Equipment

Cycling Apparel: Choose quick-drying, sun-protective fabric with UPF50+ certification, paired with an ice silk balaclava, sun-protective leg warmers, and a wide-brimmed hat to fully cover the head, neck, and limbs.
Eye Protection: Wear polarized cycling sunglasses to block strong UV rays and prevent insects and dust from entering the eyes.
Skin Protection: Apply SPF50+/PA++++ sunscreen to exposed areas 30 minutes beforehand, reapply every 2 hours during the ride, and immediately after heavy sweating.

Safety Equipment

Helmet: Essential regardless of distance. A summer-specific ventilated model is recommended, providing both heat dissipation and impact cushioning.
Gloves and Footwear: Wear non-slip cycling gloves to cushion impact and prevent slippage; wear breathable, full-fitting cycling shoes; slippers and open-toed shoes are strictly prohibited.
Visibility: Wear brightly colored cycling clothing with reflective stripes to improve road visibility in the early morning, evening, and rainy weather.

Trip Planning: Avoid High Temperatures and Dangerous Sections

Bike Cycling Time

Avoid the hottest hours of the day, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Prioritize riding between 5:00 AM and 8:00 AM or between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Prolonged outdoor cycling is not recommended when the temperature exceeds 35°C.

Route Selection

Prioritize routes with shade, well-maintained bike lanes, and low pedestrian traffic. Avoid exposed, sun-exposed sections and areas with heavy traffic. Plan rest stops in advance for long-distance rides. Take a 5-10 minute break in a cool, well-ventilated area every hour of riding. Pay close attention to weather forecasts. Cancel your trip immediately in case of heavy rain, strong winds, thunderstorms, or other severe weather.

Scientific Hydration: The Core of Maintaining Physical Fitness

Hydration Rhythm

In high-temperature environments, actively replenish 150-200 ml of water every 15-20 minutes, even if you don't feel thirsty. For example, in a 3-hour cycling session, the total water intake needs to reach 1.35-1.8 liters to effectively offset sweat loss.

Drink Selection

Choose electrolyte water or sports drinks to replenish electrolytes such as sodium and potassium lost through sweat; you can also make your own emergency drink (warm water with a little salt and half a sugar cube). Avoid ice water, carbonated drinks, and caffeinated beverages to prevent gastrointestinal irritation, bloating, or worsening dehydration. The ideal drink temperature is 10-15℃, sip slowly; only hydrate on straightaways and easy terrain, stop drinking on curves, downhill sections, and in heavy traffic.

Recognizing Body Warning Signs and Emergency Treatment

Heatstroke Warning Signs

If you experience dizziness, headache, dry mouth, weakness, or nausea: Immediately stop the vehicle and move to a cool, well-ventilated area. Loosen clothing to dissipate heat. Replenish electrolytes and use a damp towel to quickly cool the forehead, back of the neck, and armpits.

Severe Heatstroke

If high fever or confusion occurs, seek immediate medical attention.

Recovery Recommendations

Ride within your limits during summer. Rest promptly when you feel fatigued and avoid riding while exhausted. Change into dry clothing immediately after riding and consume cooling fruits and vegetables such as watermelon and cucumber.
